How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on I'm With Leaf starts with one question: will this blower handle the yard of the person shopping for it? That means your yard size, the leaves you deal with and how much weight you want to carry.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your yard

A small patio, a quarter-acre lawn and a wooded lot each need a different blower. A compact 20V blower is the wrong tool for a yard full of oak leaves.

We look at the job first, then at the blowers that fit it.

2. We compare specs and features

We check airflow (CFM), air speed (MPH), voltage, weight with the battery, the battery and charger in the box, speed settings and any vacuum or mulching kit. For corded models we also look at the amp rating and the cord lock.

Makers describe their blowers in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. That includes noise figures and runtime, which we only quote when the maker publishes them.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what owners report after a season of use. We look for patterns, like short runtime, a heavy feel at the nozzle, loud whine, clogged vacuum tubes or batteries that stop holding a charge.

One unhappy owner doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A blower that suits a big lot may score lower in a guide about small patios.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages current

Blowers get new versions, and kits change what's in the box. We check the exact model number and whether the battery and charger are included, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands that quote specs we can't make sense of. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every blower we cover.

A blower throws dust and debris at high speed. Follow the maker's manual on eye and hearing protection, and keep the nozzle pointed away from people and pets.
